During your dental hygiene visit our hygienists will evaluate your existing oral condition and educate on techniques, therapies and tools to optimize oral and general health. To help you achieve and maintain your highest level of oral health, our hygienists will work with you to develop a personal treatment plan that best suits your needs. Through yearly continued dental education, our hygienists are prepared to achieve your optimal oral health
Your oral health and overall health are connected. Poor oral health can negatively affect how you look, your overall energy level, and even how others interact with you. Studies have shown that gum disease is linked to other health risks such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, pregnancy, and respiratory problems. See our Did you know...? page for more information, or call us today to schedule an appointment.
At Peterborough Dental Clinic, we are serious about your health so we take great care to assess your oral health status and develop a preventative maintenance program personalized to your needs. Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are usually performed by Registered Dental Hygienists. Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:
Removal of Calculus (Tartar)
Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth and firmly attaches to the tooth’s surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line. It can only be removed with special dental instruments.
Removal of Plaque
Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It’s literally a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal (gum) disease.
Our teeth polishing services help remove stain and plaque build-up that isn’t removed during your toothbrushing and scaling.
Benefits of Dental Cleaning Procedures
A dental prophylaxis is performed to thoroughly clean your teeth. This is the most common service you’ll receive at our clinic. Prophylaxis plays an important role for halting the progression of gum disease and gingivitis. (See FAQ) Here are some of the benefits of prophylaxis:
Tartar and plaque build-up around the gum line cause serious periodontal problems if left untreated.
It’s hard to feel confident about a smile marred by yellowing, stained teeth. A teeth cleaning can rid your teeth of embarrassing stains, returning your smile to its former glory.
Often caused by a combination of rotting food particles below the gum line and general gum problems, bad breath (halitosis) can signify periodontal or gum disease. Removing plaque, tartar, and bacteria improves your breath and alleviates any irritation.
Professional dental cleaning can be done comfortably with local or topical anaesthetic. With topical anaesthetic, there is no needle involved. Your comfort is important to us, and we try to accommodate you as best as possible.
